Artemis
is the Greek Goddess of the moon, nature, and childbirth (also
known as the Roman goddess Diana). She is the protector
of women and mistress of animals. She is the goddess of the hunt,
and the deer and bear, animals of rebirth, are both sacred to
Artemis. She is a Virgin Goddess, independent and free
to roam the woods and choose her lovers as she wishes.
Artemis protects wild places and wild animals and to her
was known the deep places in Nature where one could rest and regain
strength. Her qualities include independence, strength, and connection
to nature and animals.
In
Greek mythology, she is the daughter of Zeus, ruler of the Olympian
gods. Artemis' mother is Leto who, as the story goes, gave
birth to Artemis after an easy labor. But then Leto's labor continued
and it was apparent that Leto was birthing twins. As her contractions
grew painful, the infant goddess Artemis rose to help he
mother and acted as midwife and delivering her twin brother Apollo.
The
Goddess Artemis was born to serve as a nurturer and protector
of women, children and childbirth. Like the Chinese Goddess Kwan
Yin, she is the goddess who hears the cries of women in need.
As a defender of the women from unjust treatment in Greek society,
her reputation as a "feminist" goddess has grown in
current times.
